Last week we counted the registered projects in Southeast Asia that Verra marks Late to Verify (the story). This is the same count for the world.
The count. On 1 October 2026, 920 registered projects were in a status that means trouble: 878 Late to Verify, 37 On Hold, 5 Verification approval request denied. Together they had promised 108 million tonnes a year. India (316) and China (211) are 57% of them.
Mostly old power projects. 559 of the 920 are renewable energy, mainly wind and hydro, much of it from the CDM era. Their credits often sell for too little to pay for another verification, and since 2024 the ICVCM has said credits from current grid renewable methodologies will not carry the CCP label (ICVCM). For many of these, late probably means finished. Berkeley’s database shows 722 of them have issued credits before, 242 million in total.
The ones that are not power plants
The rows worth a phone call are the nature and household projects. A REDD+ or agroforestry project that is late usually has a live community programme behind it and a reason it has not verified, whether money, a verifier, a land dispute or a monitoring problem. For a first-loss investor, a registered project that already cleared validation is a sourcing list, not a warning label.
