In late 2024 the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market approved Verra’s consolidated REDD+ methodology, VM0048, for its Core Carbon Principles label, alongside Verra’s jurisdictional framework and ART’s TREES. In the same decision it said credits from the older project-level REDD+ methodologies (VM0006, VM0007, VM0009, VM0015 and VM0037) could not carry the label (ICVCM). Verra has made VM0048 its REDD+ methodology for new projects.
The queue has not caught up. On 1 October 2026, 201 REDD+ projects were in Verra’s pipeline or under validation. 146 of them list one of the older methodologies on their registry page; 51 list VM0048. The older-methodology projects claim 169 million tonnes a year between them, against 40 million for the VM0048 group.
Registered REDD+ tells the same story from the other end. Of Verra’s registered REDD+ projects, 96 use an older methodology and 1 uses VM0048. The CCP-eligible REDD+ supply that buyers with integrity screens are asking for barely exists on the project-level side of the registry yet.

Where they are
The older-methodology projects in the queue are in Brazil (53), DR Congo (14), Colombia (11), Indonesia (11), Zambia (8), India (6). The VM0048 projects are in Brazil (19), Peru (7), Zambia (3), Indonesia (3), Tanzania (2), Philippines (2).
Why it matters. For a buyer, an older-methodology REDD+ listing is a project that will need to transition, or will sell outside the CCP-screened part of the market. For a developer or investor, the transition is where the work is: a VM0048 project takes its baseline from a jurisdictional allocation rather than its own reference region, which often means fewer credits per hectare and a different deal. A listed project still on VM0007 is a project whose numbers are going to change.
ICVCM’s decision concerns methodologies. Whether particular credits carry the CCP label is shown on the registry (Verra tags labelled credits). Methodologies are as listed on Verra today; we have not read each project’s documents.
