Carbon.SupplyClimate Week NYC issue
Climate Week NYC issue · Week of 21 September 2026 · eleven editions

Climate Week put the demand on stage. The supply moved on the registries.

New York Climate Week 2026 was a buyers' week. What travelled furthest were purchase commitments: Japan Airlines buying CORSIA-eligible removals, a bank lending against Microsoft and Google offtakes, Google buying a million tonnes of rice methane. Every one of those contracts will be filled from projects that are pre-issuance today, and that layer is what we read the registries for. This week it produced 17 new listings and 7 registrations. Thirteen of the listings are cookstove or solar programmes; two are forests. The nature-based supply the buyers announced for is not arriving at the pace the demand is, and that gap is the story of this issue.

New on the registries

Seventeen listings, seven registrations. Almost none of it is the supply Climate Week asked for.

Our read. Seventeen listings, seven registrations. Thirteen of the listings are cookstove or solar programmes, two are agriculture, two are forests. Of the seven registrations, the two largest are a Ugandan cookstove programme and a government-proponent REDD+ in Cambodia. The nature-based removal supply that Symbiosis buyers contracted 40 million tonnes of offtakes for is one ARR listing in Uganda this week.
What Climate Week decided

Three things that change pre-issuance supply.

Demand moved into compliance

California authorised linking its cap-and-trade market with Washington and Québec, creating North America's largest compliance carbon market by 2027. Japan Airlines signed the first CORSIA-compliant removal deal, with Climeworks. Salesforce joined Google and Microsoft as a Mombak offtaker under Symbiosis.

Why it matters. Government and compliance buyers are replacing voluntary corporate buying as the anchor. For nature-based supply, the Symbiosis contract terms and CORSIA eligibility are now the bar.

Supply got financed, and got bigger

Vaulted Deep raised $35 million of debt from Mediobanca secured on Frontier, Microsoft and Google offtakes. ADM will put 800,000 tonnes a year of geologic removal on the market from a single Nebraska plant. Agoro issued its first soil credits under a 2.6 million credit Microsoft contract. Canada opened a framework to export removal ITMOs.

Why it matters. Offtake contracts are now bankable collateral, and durable removal is about to compress the price of the removal label. Nature projects win on authorised tonnes, community data and biodiversity, not tonnes alone.

The rules, and the gatekeepers

Gold Standard opened the working group that will define Ongoing Emissions Responsibility under SBTi's Net-Zero 2.0. ICVCM and the World Bank set sixteen integrity requirements for digital MRV. Five European CDR associations demanded a binding 250 Mt removal obligation in the EU ETS. And Malaysia moved to cap Article 6 exports while Sabah barred unvetted projects.

Why it matters. Every rule rewrite favours projects with verifiable ground data on a CCP-eligible methodology. Every host-state move makes authorisation, not methodology, the scarce asset.
